Question: What
causes the "Error while trying to retrieve text for error
ORA-01019" error? I got the ORA-01019 error when
trying to connect to Excel spreadsheet.
Answer: There are several
solutions for the "error while trying to retrieve text"
error:
Also see my notes on
ORA-01019_unable_to_allocate_memory_in_the_user_side.
- One user reports that the solution was to change the
Oracle provider in connection string.
- There were more than one ORACLE_HOME path inside system
variables.
- Problems with the Oracle ODBC driver - download
latest release
- This issue occurs when there are multiple 32-bit client
libraries (SQAORA32.dll) on the same machine.
- Leftover registry key entries from a previous release
of Oracle.

The following steps will help to correct the $ORACLE_HOME
directory on the Windows client machine:
- Start Control Panel and open
"System"
- Select "Advanced" tab and double-click on
"Environment Variable" button
- Select the system
variable "ORACLE_HOME" and click Edit
- Input the
correct directory of ORACLE_HOME into "Variable value"
field. e.g."C:\oracle\ora10.2"
- Click OK to save the
changes
