ORA-01019: unable to allocate memory in the user side tips

Oracle Error Tips by Donald Burleson

Question:  I am getting this ORA-01019 error when using .NET and ODBC:

ORA-01019: unable to allocate memory in the user side

How do I fix the ORA-01019 error?

Answer The Oracle oerr utility notes this on the ora-01019 error:

ORA-01019: unable to allocate memory in the user side

Cause: The user side memory allocator returned error.

Action: Increase the processes heap size or switch to the old set of calls.

If ORA-01019 is thrown on your computer, you might want to:

  • try switching to the old set of calls OR

  • increase the processes heap size

To resolve the ORA-01019 error, add the environment variable "ORACLE_HOME" into the environment variable list, on the machine where the OCE is being created and error occurring. Once the environment variable has been configured, reboot the server for the value to be detected.

The ORA_01019 is due to an ODBC inability for the operation to allocate the memory of the users side.  While having both installations we have two ORACLE_HOME directories and both have SQAORA32.dll files. While looking up for ORACLE_HOME my application can cause the ORA-01019 error

I had an Oracle Client and then I installed XE, after that I couldn't connect to another application using Oracle and receiving the same ORA-01019 error. Once I uninstalled the client it worked OK.

Also note Bug 4961312 titled "ODBC memory leak or SQL Bulk Operations".
