Oracle 11g beta registration begins

For details, see my notes on Oracle 11g new Features

Rumors are flying that Oracle will formally announce the next major release of Oracle at Oracle Openworld 2006, most likely on Monday, October 23rd.  If we look historically, we are "due" for a new release of Oracle:

Release

Year

Years between releases

Oracle6 1988
Oracle7 1992 4
Oracle8 1997 5
Oracle8i 1998 1
Oracle9i 2001 3
Oracle10g 2004 3

avg.
years

3.2

The big question is what they are going to call the next release, and people are speculating:

  • Release number - Because some of the confusion about the existing release "11i" of Oracle Applications, some think that the next release will be dubbed release 12.

  • Release suffix - Oracle has changed release suffixes from "i" (Internet) to "g" (Grid), and some expect the next release to be "f" (Fusion).

The 11g Beta is now accepting applicants

Oracle has just announced that they are accepting beta program participants for two new programs, one for Applications (PL/SQL, Java/JDBC, and XML) and another for Oracle Audit Vault:
