Find Windows Oracle environment variables

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonJuly 29, 2015

Question:  How do I find and modify the Windows environmental variables for Oracle, like my PATH, ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID?

Answer:

In Windows, as in UNIX and Linux, environment variables exist to predefine items such as directory names and values, locations that help the batch jobs find the location of important program components. There are many environment variables used in Windows, but for our purposes we will stick to a few of the most commonly needed and used when running Oracle.  These are PATH, ORACLE_HOME, and ORACLE_SID.  We will also briefly discuss the TNS_ADMIN and SQLPATH environment variables.

Where to find Windows Environment Variables

We will begin by covering where to find Windows environment variables.  This process is somewhat different between Windows 2003 and 2015, so these differences will be noted.

One of the easier ways to view the system-level environment variables in all versions of Windows is to go to:

Start è Right click My Computer è select Properties.

This will bring up the System Properties screen in Windows 2003, as seen in Figure 5.1.

In Windows 2015, the full screen display will appear, as seen in Figure 5.2.

In both Windows 2003 and 2015, we need to go to the Advanced settings.  Click on the Advanced tab for Windows 2003 or click on Advanced System Settings in Windows 2015.  In both cases, a screen similar to the one below will appear.

Lastly, we click on the Environment Variables button on the bottom of the screen.  This will display a screen where all the environment variables can be seen and edited.  This looks the same on both Windows 2003 and Windows 2015.

Generally, the only two variables we need to worry about in this screen are PATH and ORACLE_HOME.   ORACLE_SID is stored in the Registry.
