Oracle features enabled but not licensed
Oracle Database Tips by Donald Burleson |
Question: I'm using Oracle Standard Edition One, and
the documentation says that SE1 does not support summary management
features like materialized views:
"Summary management consists of mechanisms to define
materialized views and dimensions, refresh and query rewrite
mechanisms, and a collection of materialized view analysis and
advisory functions and procedures in the DBMS_OLAP package"
But I can create an MV in SQL*Plus on standard edition one:
SQL> select * from v$version;
BANNER -------------------------------------------------------Oracle Database 10g Release 10.1.0.3.0 - Production
PL/SQL Release 10.1.0.3.0 - Production CORE 10.1.0.3.0 Production TNS for Solaris: Version 10.1.0.3.0 - Production NLSRTL Version 10.1.0.3.0 - Production
SQL> create table sac(a number primary key); Table created.
SQL> create materialized view sac_mv as select * from sac; Materialized view created.
Answer: There are probably hundreds of Oracle
features that you may be able to use, but that does not mean that
you are licensed to use it. For example, in 10g, you can access the
dba_hist tables, but you need a valid license for Oracle Diagnostic
Pack to do so!
Just because a feature is there, it does not always mean that your
license agreement allows you to use it!
If you have questions about specific license features, you should
consult your Oracle customer support representative.
I have my notes on
Oracle features - standard edition vs. enterprise edition SE EE,
and details on
Oracle Standard Edition (SE) vs. Oracle
Enterprise Edition.
