Register Data Guard standby redo log file tips

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonJune 23, 2015

Question:  How do you register standby redo log files in Oracle?  I have verified that the redo log exist in the archived redo log file destination (LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST), but they do not appear in Data Guard.  What is the process for registering redo logs in Oracle?

Answer:  One way of registering a logfile is via the following command:

SQL> alter database register logfile 'u01/app/oracle/arch/arch_101.arc';

So this is a straightforward way of registering a logfile giving the full path to the logfile. However, what if you have a very large number of logfiles to register, the above does not really scale all that well. Thankfully there is an RMAN command that enables you to register all logfiles within the standby redo log file directory:

rman> catalog start with 'u01/app/oracle/arch';

This will same you a considerable amount of work if you use the RMAN version of the command.
