Answer:
Oracle server instance consolidation is a
hallmark of 21st century computing, as shops move away from
small computers to large, mainframe-like servers. The
processor_group_name parameter is used to dedicate an
instance to a set of CPU's. As "fencing" is to RAM,
processor_group_name is to CPU's. The
processor_group_name parameter allows you to
dedicate a group of CPU's at a specific instance.
These processor_group_name are also known as a "named"
subset of CPU's and are created in different ways on
different OS environments.
Linux:
Linux uses a
feature called control groups (cgroups).
Solaris, the named subset
of CPUs are with (Solaris resource pools).
The downside of instance consolidation and fencing of
CPU resources is that it prevents other instances from using
all of the available CPU's on the server.
The processor_group_name feature is
primarily useful for consolidation. When consolidating on a
large server, you may want to restrict the database to a
specific subset of the CPU and memory.
The processor_group_name makes it easy to
enable CPU and memory restrictions for an Oracle Database
instance.
