Question: I am trying a
RMAN recovery and I am getting the ORA-19804 error.
How to I recover from the ORA-19804 error? This is a production
emergency.
Answer: RMAN is very sophisticated, and a production
recovery is not the time to be learning RMAN!
If you have purchased metal-level support from Oracle, call
800-223-1711 and open a SEV1 SR.
If not, call an independent Oracle RMAN expert at 800-766-1884.
To see the root cause of the ORA-19804 error, we first
look-up the error and see Oracle’s suggested actions.
You can
use the oerr utility to see the details for your core error.
Here is the oerr output for the ORA-19804 error:
ORA-19804:
cannot reclaim string bytes disk space from string limit
Cause:
Oracle cannot reclaim disk space of specified bytes from the
DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE limit.
Action: There are five
possible solutions:
1) Take frequent backup of recovery area using
RMAN.
2) Consider
changing RMAN retention policy.
3) Consider changing RMAN archivelog deletion
policy.
4) Add disk
space and increase DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE.
5) Delete files from
recovery area using RMAN
