Question: I am
getting the PLS-553: character set name is not recognized
error, and I need to know the location and setting for
nls_characterset.
Answer: The nls_characterset
parameter controls the character set used in the database.
The nls_characterset is normally created when the database
is created and it can be viwed with the v$nls_parameters
view:
select *
from
v$nls_parameters
where
parameter in
('NLS_CHARACTERSET');
You can also see your nls_characterset with this query:
select
value$
from
sys.props$
where
name = 'NLS_CHARACTERSET';
To change the nls_characterset you can execute an alter
database command, but beware that this can make your data
corrupt:
alter database character set
AL32UTF8;
You must then bounce the database for the change to take
effect. It is also a best practice to take a full
backup before changing nls_characterset.
