Question: In my
$ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory I find a file named hc_orcl.dat.
What is the use of this file?
For every new database I can see a file hc_sid.dat file.
What is this hc_orcl.data file and how is Oracle using it?
Answer: This is undocumented, but
the following information is available on the web about this
hc_orcl.data file:
- This is a health check monitoring data repository.
- The "hc" stands for health check
- As you noted, the file hc_<$ORACLE_SID>.dat
file created / recreated at instance startup time.
- The
hc_<$ORACLE_SID>.dat file contains information used to
monitor the instance health, and to determine why the
instance isit wown (if the instance has crashed).
- This file does not need to be backed-up.
In sum, it appears that the hc_sid.data files are
intended to be transparent to the Oracle DBA, which is why
it is undocumented.
