GoldenGate MS-SQL change data capture tips

GoldenGate Tips by Donald BurlesonApril 6, 2015

Phase 1: Configure Oracle GoldenGate change data capture (CDC) for MS-SQL

On the source system, we configure the change data capture (CDC), which composed of the primary extract, data pump extract groups, local trail and remote trail. The primary extract group creates the local trail, the data pump extract group routes to the target system where the server collector creates the remote trail. To maintain an optimized storage on the source system (production), the source manager process is configured to purge local trail files upon successfully routed to the target system, waiting for phase 4 to start applying them to the target database.

Phase 2: Start MS SQL Server BCP export utility, out direction

While the change data capture is running, the source database BCP utility is started to create the data file for the tables listed on table extracts parameter. The data files is transported to the target system ready for tables import. At this point the target database tables must be available with enabled primary and/or unique key only, leave the foreign key disabled until the completion of the initial-load.

Phase 3: Start MS SQL Server BCP import utility, in direction

While the change data capture extracts continue running, run the target database BCP utility to import the tables. We verify that the initial-load has been completed successfully, and this is considered to be a very crucial step before starting the next phase. Any table import failure should be fixed and re-run the BCP utility before proceeding with the next phase.

Record the completion time for the import phase and the current remote trail file sequence number, the information is needed for disabling collision handling.

Phase 4: Start Oracle GoldenGate change delivery

Now, once the change data capture has been running without interruption, and the initial-load is verified completed and successful y using BCP utility, it is time to start the Replicat process to apply the transactions to the target database using the database interface.
