ASM disk does not exist or is not instantiated tips

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonApril 15, 2015

Question:
I am creating an ASM diskgroup and I issued this command OK:

   # /etc/init.d/oracleasm configure -i

Then, I created a partition to use as ASM DISK, using the graphical tool Disk Utility:

   /dev/u02 - 4GB

Next, I ran this command and got the message that the "disk does not exist or is not instantiated":

   # /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk DISK1 /dev/u02
Marking disk "DISK1" as an ASM disk: [FAILED]

Finally, I checked for ASM create errors in /var/log/oracleasm and saw this ASM disk error message:

Disk "DISK1" does not exist or is not instantiated
      Writing disk header: done
      Instantiating disk: oracleasm-instantiate-disk:
Unable to create ASM disk "DISK1": Permission denied

How do I fix this "disk is not instantiated error?

Answer:
The ASM error "disk does not exist or is not instantiated" error can be caused by many issues:

     - Not disabling SELINUX:

        vi /etc/sysconfig/selinux SELINUX=disabled

Then reboot your system and run getenforce to confirm that
        SELINUX is disabled:

        root> /usr/sbin/getenforce Disabled

- Ensureingthat /etc/rc.local is read immediately after reboot.
You need specify the block devices, 660 permissions in the rc.local file

     - Not using  fdisk to create a standard partition and use that partition for ASM.

References on ASM disk exists instantiated errors:

   - Next, read MOSC notes 1096685.1, 394956.1

   - See MOSC note 265633.1, ASM technical best practices.

   - See this article for a best practices description of creating ASM devices for Oracle
