ORA-37002: Oracle OLAP failed to initialize. Please contact Oracle OLAP technical support tips

Oracle Error Tips by Burleson Consulting

Oracle docs note this about ORA-37002:

ORA-37002: Oracle OLAP failed to initialize. Please contact Oracle OLAP technical support.
Cause: A severe error occurred while initializing OLAP.
Action: Contact support (and possibly OLAP development) for help in debugging the issue.

Many users find themselves encountering error ORA-37002.

ORA-37002 occurs when a user is trying to backup an OLAP catalog schema.  When attempting to backup using RMAN, if the exporting 9.2.0.5-10.1.0.3 was manually created, ORA-37002 will be thrown.  Exporting RMAN can also result in ORA-37002 and associated errors.

The message that you will find is:

. exporting refresh groups and children
. exporting dimensions
. exporting post-schema procedural objects and actions

EXP-00008: ORACLE error 37002 encountered
ORA-37002: Oracle OLAP failed to initialize. Please contact Oracle OLAP technical support.

ORA-33262: Analytic workspace EXPRESS does not exist.
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_AW", line 27
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_AW", line 115
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_AW_EXP", line 325
ORA-06512: at line 1

ORA-37002 is caused by the lack of OLAP on the database, which occurs if the database is created from a script without OLAP.  General purpose databases may have underlying basic OLAP and still return ORA-37002 because the export  would continually be searching for components to catalog.

Also important to note it that ORA-37002 can also be thrown with, the associated errors, after a database has been upgraded.  If this occurs, you can resolve ORA-37002 by using this execution:

1. To Perform Relational Exports (schema/database) without Analytic Workspaces.

SQL> conn / as SYSDBA
SQL> delete from sys.exppkgact$ where package = 'DBMS_AW_EXP';

To restore this run the following

SQL> conn / as sysdba
SQL> @ ?/rdbms/admin/dbmsaw.plb
