ODBC slow Performance

ODBC is a standardized Application Programming Interface (API). It makes it possible for applications to connect to SQL databases. The ODBC features can be used to develop applications that are independent from the database. These features include function calls, error codes, and data types which can be defined by the designer to fit the needs of the application. The API does not communicate with the database directly, but serves as a link between the application and the generic interface routine. The interface routine is then able to communicate with the database drivers through a Service Provider Interface (SPI).

Databases that are subject to high traffic may have performance problems when ODBC is used. Many Oracle applications experience increased overhead because connecting via ODBC is less efficient than using a native API call to the database. It is therefore recommended that ODBC be replaced with a native communications tool such as the Oracle Call Interface (OCI). ODBC generally works fine for occasional database queries but is too slow to be a permanent fixture in most production applications.
