It's never a good idea to plan an Oracle 10g upgrade migration without
fully understanding the important changes in Oracle 10g, as many
of the changes are complex and unobtrusive.
The benefits of an upgrade to Oracle 10g are very compelling.
Oracle has completely rewritten the source code to make it far
faster, and native PL/SQL can run many times faster than
Oracle9i. Oracle 10g is also more stable and robust.
Also, many DBA features are automated in Oracle 10g including
optimizer statistics collection and the new Automatic Workload
repository which captures important time-series performance
data.

Oracle9i desupport date set for
July 2007
It is highly recommended that Oracle9i shops who migrate to
Oracle 10g consult with a 10g migration expert to ensure a smooth an
optimal migration. |

Oracle 10g upgrades - The Cautious Majority vs. Dr. DBA
May 6, 2004The Cautious side:
In this corner, wearing the demeanor of patience and caution, user's
of Oracle 10g stand by their wait-and-see attitude.
In her article for
eWeek.com,
Database Center Editor, Lisa Vaas
spoke up and disagreed with Dr. DBA. Lisa writes,
"Who dares to
differ with Dr. DBA? Plenty of people, actually. This column argues
against the Oracle guru, who last week advised users to speed up their
10g plans and get their hands on the newest DBMS technology. Why wait?
First off, there simply isn't enough data available yet that shows 10g
is read to roll."
In this corner
wearing a healthy dose of optimism and eagerness, Ken Jacobs,
aka Dr. DBA encourages users that the time is now.
In
SearchOracle.com's article by Editor,
Robyn Lorusso, Dr.
DBA explains his stance,
"It's fully supported. In fact, you can go straight to 10g
from 8.0, 8i, 9i R1 or 9i R2. We are encouraging people to upgrade
directly to 10g."
