ORA-65040: operation not allowed from within a pluggable database

Question:  I am getting the ORA-xxxx error when attempting to change my SYSTEM password in Oracle 12c:

ERROR:

ORA-28001: the password has expired

Changing password for system

New password:

Retype new password:

ERROR:

ORA-65040: operation not allowed from within a pluggable database


Answer:  The oerr utility shows this for the ORA-65040 error:

ORA-65040: operation not allowed from within a pluggable database

Cause: An operation was attempted that can only be performed in the root container.

Action: Switch to the root container to perform the operation

You can switch to the root container in one of these ways:

 

 

SQL> conn / as sysdba
