Question: What
does the Oracle 12c release 2 "history" command do in
sqlplus?
Answer: The sqlplus history
command is used to show the history of sqlplus SQL and
SQL*Plus commands. Historically, you could use the up
and down arrow keys to display and edit previous commands.
There are several options to the history command:
SQL>
set history on
SQL> show
history
SQL> show history
history is ON and set to “100”
SQL> history
SQL> history 4 run
SQL
history 4 edit
SQL> clear history
Examples of the sqlplus history
command
Here we have enabled the history and it’s set to 100
statements. The history will show all previous 100 commands:
SQL>
history
1 select * from dual;
2 select sysdate from
dual;
3 show history
To execute a statement from history you reference it by
statement number.
SQL> history 2 run
SYSDATE
———
09-APR-17
To
edit a statement you use the edit sub-command:
SQL> history 2 edit
