Question: What are
the perils of using Oracle deferrable constraints? I
understand that deferrable constraints can be dangerous.
Please give an example showing why deferrable constraints
are bad.
Answer: The deferred constraint
command is a way to improve the speed of data loading by
bulking the constraint checking for a batch of rows, rather
than a row at a time.
ALTER SESSION SET CONSTRAINTS =
DEFERRED;
Then, you can re-enable to constraint and check the whole
table at once:
ALTER SESSION SET CONSTRAINTS =
IMMEDIATE;
Of course, these commands will not work with constraints
that are marked as "not deferrable".
