Identifying External Data Requirements

Oracle Tips by Burleson Consulting

The Data Warehouse Development Life Cycle

IDENTIFYING EXTERNAL DATA REQUIREMENTS

Data source analysis also means developers should identify external data sources that need to be incorporated into the system. For example, an end user might state that they want to analyze sales by metropolitan area. Figure 3.14 shows an external data source analysis for a data warehouse.

While the request to measure sales by geographic region might seem to be a straightforward request, it may require data from an external database. For example, if a sales transaction only includes city and ZIP code information, then information about Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSA) may be required. In other words, Guttbaum’s Grocery may want a study of sales in the entire Los Angeles metro area, including Santa Monica, Watts, Hollywood, Mar Vista, and Venice. The SMSA data allows these suburbs to be logically grouped by ZIP code into a geographically related area.
