Using Object IDs (OIDs) in Oracle

Dangling REFs

When dealing with REF values and objects it is always possible that a REF could have been left without a proper tie to an object (say the master record got deleted and no one thought to send a message to the child records to delete themselves) this is called a dangling REF. The IS |IS NOT DANGLING clause can be added to check for dangling refs. For example, suppose we have a CARS_SOLD table with reference column, IN_STOCK that refers back to IN_STOCK_CARS:

BEGIN
UPDATE cars_sold SET stock_number = NULL WHERE in_stock IS DANGLING;
END;

The above code would eliminate any dangling refs.
