Using Export exclude=index Tips

Expert Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonMarch 16, 2015

Question:  I am running an export and I saw that my indexes still appear to have been exported by expdp.  Should I use exclude=index to speed up the export?  How else can I speed up an expdp using the exclude clause?

Answer:  Data Pump DOES NOT export indexes!

The expdp utility only exports the index definitions, a whole other thing!

The index trees and index data are never exported.

Instead, at import time, the indexes are rebuilt from the DDL statements that exist in the dmp file.

The exclude=indexes only tells data pump to exclude the index definitions.

The index definitions are quickly punched from the data dictionary in under one second.

Using exclude=index will not make your export run longer, and you will want the index definitions when you run the impdp utility![/b]

This book has complete details on the export exclude options for expdp.

Also see my notes on improving export speed.
