Upgrade Oracle 9i or 10g to Oracle 11g

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonJanuary 21,  2015

Question:  I want to migrate directly from Oracle 9i to Oracle11g.  What things do I need to do to prepare for an 9i to 11g upgrade?  What is the best way to migrate my data from Oracle9i to Oracle database 11g?

Answer:  There are many ways to do an 9i to 11g upgrade, and several options for migrating the data.  Oracle11g is very different from Oracle9i, and you need to check my notes on Oracle upgrade gotchas.

Also, check you OS kernel parameters for any changes.  Also, make sure that you are not moving from 32-bit to 64-bit, and if so, take the necessary precautions:

If you are not experienced, you can also use the OEM Database Upgrade Assistant.

Also, make sure to check the Oracle 11g upgrade guide, and MOSC for any 9i to 11g upgrade notes.

Here are some ways to move the database from 8i to Oracle11g:

  • export - Oracle traditional export/import (exp, imp) is retained in 11g for backward compatibility.

  • CTAS - You can use "create table as select" over a database link to move specific tables.  Then you need to use dbms_metadata to punch-off the index and constraint DDL.

  • Clone database - Depending on your OS, you can clone the Oracle9i database onto the 11g platform and upgrade it in-place.

Once migrated, make sure to get the Oracle 11g New Features book to understand what new features to implement.
