Upgrade Oracle 8i to Oracle 10g or 11g

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonJanuary 21,  2015

Question:  I want to migrate directly from Oracle 8i to Oracle 10g.  What things do I need to do to prepare for an 8i to 10g upgrade?  What is the best way to move the data from 8i to 10g?

Answer:  There are many ways to do an 8i to 10g upgrade, and several options for migrating the data.  Oracle10g is very different from Oracle8i, and you need to check my notes on Oracle10g upgrade gotchas.

Also, check you OS kernel parameters for any changes.  Also, make sure that you are not moving from 32-bit to 64-bit, and if so, take the necessary precautions:

If you are not experienced, you can also use the OEM Database Upgrade Assistant.

Also, make sure to check the Oracle 10g upgrade guide, and MOSC for any 8i to 10g upgrade notes.

Here are some ways to move the database from 18 to Oracle10g:

  • export - Oracle data pump import will recognize the old export dmp file from Oracle8i
  • CTAS - You can use "create table as select" over a database link to move specific tables
  • Clone database - Depending on your OS, you can clone the Oracle8i database onto the 10g platform and upgrade it in-place.

Once migrated, make sure to get the Oracle 10g New Features book to understand what new features to implement.
