Topiary first became popular to the masses with the introduction of the Chia Pet, but it's an ancient art form.

 

 

Topiary is very flexible with a wealth of possible designs, but you must start with the right shrubs.  These include box (Buxus sempervirens), arborvitae (Thuja spp.), bay laurel (Laurus nobilis), holly (Ilex spp.), myrtle (Eugenia or Myrtus species), yew (Taxus species), and privet (Ligustrum species.).
