Spyware and Adware Detection and Immunization
Don Burleson
|
Spyware and adware can become an epidemic. It is become a
major threat and it is more than just annoying.
- Kills Performance - Spyware and adware can cripple
your PC, clog your ports and ruin your performance.
- Malicious - Many malicious spyware programs will
steal credit card numbers, confidential information and leave
your refrigerator door open. (OK, I made the last one up)
- Easily transmitted - Spyware and adware can also be
transmitted via e-mail and it is important to take steps to
block all incoming infections.
In an
great article title
Poor Defenders, PC World clearly noted that the freeware
tool “Spybot Search & Destroy”
product was the best tool in their tests, beating all of the
extra-cost products. The Spybot vendor asks for a small
donation and provides semi-weekly updates to their vast array
of spyware definitions.
Spyware and adware are most commonly introduced via known
vulnerabilities on browsers and all BC consultants are
required to take the following precautions:
1. Install Firefox Browser
Firefox is a Mozilla open-source browser and it blocks
incoming spyware and adware. Please download it here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
2. Stop using Internet Explorer
3. DBAs only - Add MOSC search extension
for Firefox:

4. Download & Install Spybot Search &
Destroy This is considered the best spyware tool
in the market and Janet has already made the appropriate
donation:

5. Download and install Ad Aware
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
6. Run Spybot and Ad
Aware at least once per week
Run Spybot regularly until it consistently finds that you are
not receiving new spyware and adware infections:
a) Search for updates b) Check for Problems
