Oracle: Set threshold alerts

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonOctober 14 ,2008

It's critical to use an exception-based reporting mechanism with Oracle and send e-mail alerts whenever an important metric exceeds a pre-defined threshold.

Oracle OEM allows beginners to set pre-defined thresholds, and Oracle 11g has introduced adaptive threshold, rolling threshold value that self adjust based on your current workload.

For advanced DBA's who want more power than afforded in OEM, you can write shell scripts and dbms_scheduler jobs to periodically monitor Oracle and alert on exceptional conditions.

This is an important proactive approach which can often identify problem before they have a change to cripple your database.

For full details, see my book "Oracle Tuning: The Definitive Reference", by Rampant TechPress.
