Restore a single table in RMAN

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonMarch 1,  2015

Oracle: Restore a single table in RMAN

Question:  I have a case where a table was accidentally corrupted and I need to do a point-in time recovery of the table to a time immediately preceding the truncation of the table.  How do you restore a single table in Oracle with RMAN?  Do I need to do a point-in-time recovery into a separate schema, just to extract the lost table?

I have to keep the original database up and running at all times therefore I can't place the backed up files in the same place. I need to copy them to another location and do a point in time recovery on the copied instance.

I think i need to use the backup control file with trace option but I am trying to find documentation on all the steps I need to follow to create the second DB and have it do the point in time recovery when it starts up.

Answer:  Because the table was wiped-out by a truncate, you must restore to a point immediately prior to the truncate and be sure that you will not have any constraint issues (referential integrity).

Unfortunately, you may have no simpler option that restoring the table in a TEST database, and extract the table for replacing in your production database.

Backup and recovery is a critical task, and if you have not done this before, I would hire a certified remote Oracle recovery expert to do this for you.
