Question: I am having trouble removing some ASM datafiles from
disk in my RAC cluster. I created 3 new temp files and tried to delete the
huge temp files. I did this “alter tablespace drop tempfile” from sqlplus:
ALTER TABLESPACE PSTEMP DROP TEMPFILE
'+DATA/isis/tempfile/pstemp.291.641298061';
But the huge files are still in ASM storage. How do I
permanently remove an ASM file from disk?
Answer: If you are on 10gR2 or beyond, you can use
asmcmd rm command to remove a data file. I think that you
need to use one of the
asmcmd commands
to drop a datafile:
ASMCMD> rm -- remove file/directory
Just make sure your SID is set properly and type asmcmd
from the command line. In there you can cd, ls, pwd and rm to remove
ASM files and directories. Check out this
article on
using asmcmd commands.
You can use the alter diskgroup and drop diskgroup
to
remove ordinary ASM disk groups.
For more details on using ASM with RAC, see the book
Oracle Grid & Real Application Clusters.
