Regular expressions for parsing-out substrings from larger strings

Oracle Database Tips by Donald Burleson

This example below is from Alan Wintersteens's fabulous paper "Regular Expressions for Regular Folks", published by UDTUG 2005 and shows how to "strip-out a last name from a "full name" string":

"The example below shows the completed expression which returns the last name portion only, stripping off any generational indicator, and the symbols commonly used to separate that portion from the name.

This select also used the regexp_replace function to eliminate any double spaces within the last name column, and performs that operation before searching for the generational indicator, and removing it if present."
