Read PDF file with Oracle Tips

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonNovember 4, 2015

Question: I would like to know how to use Oracle SQL or PL/SQL to read a PDF file. I understand that the PDF file can be stored as a BLOB datatype inside an Oracle table. How ro I read a PDF with Oracle? I want to write a query that will look inside a pdf file that is stored to an oracle table. For example, select * from table where pdf_string like '%four score and seven years ago%'. How do I red the PDF with SQL?

Answer: There are several ways to read a PDF file with Oracle, all depending upon how the PDF is stored in the database. In mst cases, the slution involves using the dbms_lob pachage along with Oracle Text.

- See my notes on creating a PDF in Oracle.

- Oracle Text supports MS Office and PDF formats. See my notes on SQL SQL against Oracle Text.

- Here is an example of using the BFILE to store and query a PDF in Oracle:

- There is a free PL/SQL library for generating PDFs from Oracle, called PL_FPDF.

- See this example for creating a searching through a PDF in Oracle

For information on inserting a PDF as a BFILE, see this example PL/SQL:

create pdm(pk number primary key, pdf_file blob, pdf_clob clob);

DECLARE
src_file BFILE := BFILENAME('SSS_DIR', '1232.pdf');
lgh_file BINARY_INTEGER;
dst_file BLOB;
BEGIN
INSERT INTO pdm
VALUES (1,'1232.pdf', EMPTY_BLOB (),null)
RETURNING pdf_file
INTO dst_file;
DBMS_LOB.OPEN(src_file, dbms_lob.file_readonly);
lgh_file := dbms_lob.getlength(src_file);
DBMS_LOB.LOADFROMFILE(dst_file, src_file, lgh_file);

dbms_lob.close(src_file);
commit;
END;
