Oracle RAC SGA sizing

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonAugust 11, 2015

Question:  I need to size my SGA for a RAC database.  How does SGA sizing differ for a RAC database?

Answer:  As you know, RAC is different because each node has a separate SGA.  The rule for SGA sizing on a RAC node is the same goal as a single instance SGA, to allocate "all" of the RAM (so not to waste), while not causing paging.  Within the SGA, you need to access the separate demands of the SGA pools (data buffer, library cache) and size them according to the RAC workload.

Here are general rules and guidelines for Oracle SGA sizing.  Also, we must remember that RAC databases like smaller blocksizes to reduce the amount of pinging across the cache fusion layer.
