Mothballing a Database Project

Oracle Tips by Mike Ault

Training Materials. If the project was far enough along, there will be training material that has been developed. This will probably consist of examples, perhaps a written manual and a participants guide of some kind. Do not forget to include this with your documentation set.
Team member's comments. Capture an honest and detailed report from each of the team members that gives any suggestions for improvement for the project. These reports should contain opinions as well as factual data. This allows the team members to get a feeling of closure. At least if they were not able to complete the project they will be able to explain in their own words what they feel went wrong and how to avoid it in the future.
Tape or backup media copies. These media copies should include all source code, DDL, export sets or backup sets that would allow the new team to rebuild the system as it existed on the day of shutdown. Any special setup or handling requirements should also be provided. Remember if you use a CASE tool to cut an extract set from the CASE tool's tables for this project and include the extract with this media.

For more information on this topic, I recommend Don Burleson's latest book "Oracle Tuning: The Definitive Reference".
