Question: I am
defining an array in my PL/SQL and I am getting this PLS-00642 error
in my PL/SQL when I try to reference the array in my SQL:
PLS-00642: local collection types not allowed in SQL statement
Can you tell me why I am getting this PLS-00642 and help me avoid
it?
Answer: To diagnose any error, you start by using the
oerr utility
to fully display the PLS-00642 error:
PLS-00642: Local
collection types not allowed in SQL statements
Cause: A locally-defined (i.e. not schema level) collection type was
used in a SQL statement. The type must be defined in a schema to be
accepted in a SQL statement.
Action: Define the collection type in your schema, not inside a
PL/SQL subprogram
In sum, the PLS-00642 error you're getting is
telling you that you have a locally-defined collection type in your
SQL statement. It appears that the issue is with the array in your
PL/SQL where you defined the TYPE, as below:
TYPE
title_collection IS TABLE OF VARCHAR2(60);
To avoid the PLS-00642, the collection will need to be defined at the schema
level; therefore, you would need to define the varray table as a real
table, using Oracle DDL with the CREATE TYPE syntax.
