Oracle PL/SQL developer programmer job duties

Question: I'm a programmer without Oracle experience and I'm interviewing for a job as a PL/SQL developer. What are the job duties of a PL/SQL developer? How is the job of a PL/SQL programmer different?

Answer: The job duties of a PL/SQL developer are very much the same as programmers in non-database environments, but PL/SQL programmers must know more than the PL/SQL language syntax. A PL/SQL programmer job duties may involve Oracle-centric concepts, such as writing triggers, Oracle stored procedures and advanced PL/SQL communications with Oracle (bulk collect, forall).

To get an idea what employers look for in a PL/SQL developer, I recommend the book "Conducting the Oracle Job Interview". It has a section for managers to help them hire the right type of PL/SQL developer.

Also, in some shops, PL/SQL developer are allowed to perform DBA job duties such as creating tables and indexes. Rampant TechPress has a quick-start book for programmers "Easy Oracle PL/SQL" that you may find useful.
