Ensuring All Necessary Software is Installed

Oracle Database Tips by Donald Burleson

The code depot for this book includes a script that, when run, will request insertion of the Fedora install CDs and will install any software that is required by Oracle. This script is also available by itself on the web.

Figure 2.16 demonstrates the use of wget to obtain the ensure_installed.shscript and then runs the script. When the first Fedora install CD is inserted, an alert window may appear asking, ?Do you wish to run the /mnt/cdrom/auotrun?. Answer ?No? to this question. Then continue with the script.

There are two programs that will be used frequently, namely gnome-terminal and gedit. To make the desktop easier to use, now is a good time to change the taskbar to include these programs.

To start this process, right-click on the ?Printer? icon that appears on the taskbar and choose ?Properties?. A dialog appears similar to that shown in Figure 2.18. Change the name, comment and command to gnome-terminal . Then change the icon by clicking the ?Icon? and choosing a new icon that makes sense to you for a terminal. Finally click ?Close.?

Repeat the above steps to change the icon that launches the mail program, but this time to launch gedit. For name, comment, and command type gedit. Change the icon to one that makes sense for a text editor.

%                 Now is a good time to download the code depot, especially if you wish to install the provided desktop images. Turn to Appendix B for instructions.
