Oracle partitioning and derived horizontal fragmentation (DHF)

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonMay 24, 2015

Question:  I'm doing my masters degree thesis and I want to understand how Oracle partitioning has enabled derived horizontal fragmentation (DHF).

Answer:  Oracle partitioning supports both derived vertical fragmentation via the ability to use multiple columns, and derived horizontal fragmentation by hashing, which clusters similar data in specific partition areas.  Oracle partitioning also supports primary horizontal fragmentation (PHF), in the sense that partitioning pruning eliminates unneeded partitions from a query domain.

Oracle's multi-type partitioning (hash within range) is a hybrid fragmentation scheme in the sense that it combines both vertical fragmentation, and then either primary or derived horizontal fragmentation as the second level of partitioning.  In vertical fragmentation, Oracle distributes the data into specific partition areas.  At this point, "derived" horizontal fragmentation, can break-out sub-classes of the partition key.
