Prohibit
Firearms and Other Weapons
The employer should define a company policy
prohibiting weapons such as guns and knives from being brought onto
company premises. These weapons increase the probability and extent of
violence that could occur. The consequence of a violation should
be a policy of zero-tolerance and require immediate termination of
employment. The Workplace Weapons policy should be published to all
employees in many ways such as in policy manuals, the company
intranet, wall postings and so on.
Keep the Termination
Meeting Brief
Dismissing an employee is not an easy or pleasant
event for any IT manager. Allowing the termination meeting
to extend longer than is necessary will provide more time for
potentially aggressive behavior to occur. There is no need to go over
in extensive detail the events of the past. The manager should have
all the facts documented for the firing at this point and the case
fully justified. So the firing should be simple, straightforward, and
brief; to limit the time the employee has to think of reasons why he
or she should not be fired or should become overly aggravated.
FAST FACT
An estimated one
million workers, 18,000 per week, are victims of non-fatal workplace
assaults each year.
