Workplace
Violence
Violence
in the workplace has become more
prevalent in recent years. There have been high-profile incidents of
former or current employees going committing egregious acts. Many of
these actions are in response to some traumatic event, such as
termination of employment.
According to the Workplace Violence Research
Institute, violence in the
workplace is characterized by a hostile environment created by any
actions against an employee, which results in physical or
psychological harm. Some common violent acts include intimidation,
harassment, physical assaults, abusive language, and blackmail.
Many times, IT managers will notice erratic
behavior by troubled employees during the process of applying
progressive discipline, as well
as during and after the termination of employees. Every manager and
professional should be aware of the signs of potential workplace
violence.
FAST FACT
Homicide is the
leading cause of workplace death among females and workers under 18
years of age.

for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
For some employees, work is a disproportionately
important part of their lives. There needs to be a balance between
work-life and personal-life. Many IT organizations have personnel who
put in exorbitant amounts of work-time that is unnecessary to
accomplish a normal day's work for their job function. They are
usually overprotective of "their" work and responsibilities, more of a
loner, and do not work well in a team environment.
