Maintain
the Self-esteem of Employees Being Fired
Extra care should be taken to respect the dignity
of the employee being released. IT managers should always treat their
employees properly and especially during traumatic events such as
employment termination.
An employee who feels degraded or abused by the
dismissal process is more inclined to become upset and even angry with
the manager, co-workers, and the company as a whole. This anger can
lead the dismissed employee to any number of aggressive responses
including sabotage of the computer systems, physical and emotional
attacks, threats, harassment, and stalking. Even though the computer
professional is being terminated, it would be wise for the manager to
express some appreciation for the employee’s contributions, regardless
of the current state of employment.
A statement such as “we appreciate your
contributions to the company, but we cannot tolerate any further
violations of company policies” may be enough to dissipate any pent up
internal pressure.
