Federal Employment Laws

The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces several Federal employment laws that prohibit job discrimination and may be applicable to employment termination. These laws include:

• Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII)

• The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA)

• Title I and Title V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA)

• The Civil Rights Act of 1991

Other federal laws not administered by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that also provide protections surrounding employment termination include the:

• Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA)

• Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA)

• Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA)

• Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002
