Data Guard Data Program protection mode Tips

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonDecember 9, 2015

Oracle Data Guard Broker

Managing Data Protection Modes

  • Modify the log transport mode for each Oracle instance that is participating in the new protection mode. The Data Guard broker property, LogXptMode maps to the attributes of the log_archive_dest_n parameter managing the log transport mode. Hence, the value of the LogXptMode property must be altered for each site participating in the new protection mode.

  • Assume that the goal is to change the protection mode from MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE to MAXIMUM PROTECTION, and the Oracle instance "stdbydb" will be participating in this new protection mode.  Create standby redo log files on the stdbydb database and modify its LogXptMode to SYNC as shown below:

Oracle9i Syntax:

ALTER RESOURCE 'stdbydb' ON SITE 'stdbydb' SET PROPERTY LogXptMode=SYNC;

Oracle10g Syntax:

EDIT DATABASE 'stdbydb' SET PROPERTY LogXptMode=SYNC;

  • The protection mode of a configuration should be modified as follows:

Oracle9i Syntax:

ALTER CONFIGURATION SET PROTECTION MODE AS MAXPROTECTION;

Oracle10g and beyond Syntax:

EDIT CONFIGURATION SET PROTECTION MODE AS MAXPROTECTION;

The primary database will need to be restarted for the new protection to take effect. Data Guard broker restarts the primary database if the configuration is enabled.

The above text is an excerpt from the book: Oracle Data Guard Handbook
