Data Guard alter resource database set state commands

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonDecember 9, 2015

Oracle Data Guard - Data Guard Broker

Administration of Log Management Services

Log management service is a combination of the log transport service and the log apply service. The log transport service manages the transfer of redo data from the primary database to standby databases. The log apply service operates solely on standby databases and is responsible for applying the changes from the primary database onto the standby database.

It is recommended that the log management services remain running without any interruption to avoid any data loss. However, in certain circumstances such as scheduled maintenance work, it may be desirable to stop the log management services to a specific site or all sites in a configuration. In the next section, information about administrating log transport services and log apply services using CLI commands will be presented.

Log Transport Services

In order to stop log transport services to all standby sites, the sub-state of the primary database needs to be altered to READ-WRITE in Oracle9i and to LOG-TRANSPORT-OFF in Oracle10g. The following statement can be used to modify the sub-state in order to stop log transport service:

Oracle9i Syntax:

ALTER RESOURCE 'appsdb' ON SITE 'appsdb' SET STATE='READ-WRITE';

Oracle10g Syntax:

EDIT DATABASE 'appsdb' SET STATE='LOG-TRASPORT-OFF';

Log Transport Services

In this sub-state, the archiver process will not transmit any redo data to the standby archival destination. The local archival destinations will continue to receive archived redo logs without any interruption. To restart the log transport service to all sites, put the primary database back into the
READ-WRITE-XPTON sub-state in Oracle9i and to ONLINE state in Oracle10g as shown below.

Oracle9i Syntax:

ALTER RESOURCE 'appsdb' ON SITE 'appsdb'
SET STATE='READ-WRITE-XPTON';

Oracle10g Syntax:

EDIT DATABASE 'appsdb' SET STATE='ONLINE';

The log transport service to a specific site is controlled by the property LogShipping. The default value of LogShipping is "ON". It must be set to "OFF" in order to stop sending redo data to a specific site. In the following example, the log transport to the standby site "stdbydb" is being stopped:

Oracle9i Syntax:

ALTER RESOURCE 'stdbydb' ON SITE 'stdbydb'
SET PROPERTY LogShipping='OFF';

Log Transport Services

Oracle10g Syntax:

EDIT DATABASE 'stdbydb' SET PROPERTY LogShipping='OFF';

Log Apply Services

The log apply services can be controlled by modifying the sub-state of the standby database. On a physical Oracle instance running on Oracle9i database software, the log apply service can be stopped by putting the database in the PHYSICAL-APPLY-READY state.

When the database is in the READ-ONLY mode, the redo logs will not be applied. Similarly, on a logical standby database, setting the sub-state to LOGICAL-APPLY-READY will achieve the same result.

Oracle10g introduced a new state called LOG-APPLY-OFF, which is applicable to both physical and logical standby databases. In this state, as the name suggests, the log apply services will not apply redo data from the primary database.
