Data Guard Broker DMON Process

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonDecember 9, 2015

Oracle Data GuardChapter 8 - Data Guard Broker

Preparing to Use Data Guard Broker

On Sun Solaris and other UNIX operating systems, these files are created in the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory. Oracle uses two configuration files to keep the last good known configuration settings during the modification of the configuration properties or state by the DMON process.

  • Create a server parameter file for each database in the configuration.

  • This is required because the DMON process can restart a database when its state is changed from offline to online or after role transition. The parameters required to start up a database are recorded in the server parameter file, which the DMON process can read to start the database.

  • Use the parameter dg_broker_start to start and stop the Data Guard broker process.

  • To start the broker, set this parameter to TRUE in the initialization parameter file and restart the database.

  • To start the broker for a database that is already up and running, use the following statement:

ALTER SYSTEM SET DG_BROKER_START=TRUE;

  • After executing this statement, a DMON process will start. On UNIX operating systems, it can be verified using the ps –ef command.

  • To stop the DMON process, set this parameter to FALSE.

  • Use DGMGRL to start the CLI environment. The following statement on a UNIX operating system will start the CLI environment:

  • DBA@jrpr01 dgmgrl
