Data Guard Role transition Tips

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonDecember 9, 2015

Oracle Data Guard - Switchover and Failover role transition

Role transition is an integral part of the Data Guard environment. In this chapter, the concept behind role transitions and the implementation specifics was presented in detail.

The following topics were covered in detail to assist in the case of disaster recovery or a switchover needed to allow the DBA to do routine maintenance activities:

  • Concepts of switchover and failover were presented followed by a quick list of disadvantages of role transition to a logical standby database.

  • A brief description of how to determine the best Oracle instance for role transition.

  • The nitty-gritty of role transitions to physical and logical standby databases.

  • Verification of role transition.

A role transition should always be accompanied with changes in Oracle Net configuration to route the requests from applications to the new primary database. A limited amount of information on the Transparent Application Failover provides an alternate approach in configuring Oracle Net to handle such situations.

More information regarding role transitions can be found in Oracle manuals and from the MOSC site at MOSC.oracle.com. This chapter marks the end of the basic concept and administration of standby databases. By now the techniques used to create and manage a simple Data Guard environment should be familiar.

The upcoming chapters will deal with advanced concepts like Performance Tuning, Using Oracle Data Guard Broker and Recovery Manager for Standby Databases.

The above text is an excerpt from the book: Oracle Data Guard Handbook
