Oracle user script

Oracle Database Tips by Donald Burleson

Oracle script to determine what users exist in your database

The following query will provide you with a list of current users in the database and uses the dba_users data dictionary view. We also include the default and temporary tablespace settings for these users so you can insure that those tablespaces are configured for a tablespace other than the SYSTEM tablespace (a common problem in databases not properly configured, especially Oracle 9i databases).

We also included some SQL*Plus formatting commands so that the output would be easy to read. That is one of the problems you run into with the data dictionary, often the columns will run off the end of the screen. Use the SET LINES command in concert with the COLUMN command, as seen in this example, to get output that is much easier to read. Here is the first example:

SQL> set lines 80
SQL> column username format a20
SQL> column default_tablespace format a20
SQL> column temporary_tablespace format a20
SQL> Select username, default_tablespace, temporary_tablespace
2 From dba_users
3 Order by username;
-------------------- -------------------- -------------
MDDATA               USERS                TEMP
MDSYS                SYSAUX               TEMP
MGMT_VIEW            SYSAUX               TEMP
OLAPSYS              SYSAUX               TEMP
ORDPLUGINS           SYSAUX               TEMP
ORDSYS               SYSAUX               TEMP
OUTLN                SYSTEM               TEMP
SCOTT                USERS                TEMP
