Question:  I need a read-deal Oracle performance tuning expert, someone that I can trust, and I need to choose a respected expert as CYA for my top management.  I see lots of people claiming to be Oracle experts, some of whom I know to be inexperienced.  How do I tell a real Oracle expert?

 

Answer:  Many recognized Oracle experts believe that "real" Oracle expertise comes only from years of paid full-time job experience, and you should look for experts who have been hired by major corporations for mission critical Oracle jobs that require proven Oracle experts. 

 

Sadly, there are lots of posers, fake Oracle expert wannabees who puff their work experience and credentials.  Some resort to outright deception, like the infamous Oracle expert Ed Haskins who created a fake Oracle expert.  Several years ago, Ed Haskins used this stock photo to create "Robert Allen", a fictional Oracle expert that he used to entice unsuspecting customers:

When evaluating a self-appointed Oracle expert, I look for this:

• Open-minded - Some Oracle experts advocate a singular Oracle tuning approach, (often their own method) and ignore all alternatives, often to your detriment.  A real Oracle tuning expert will use a variety of methods and techniques.
   

• Published resumes - Never use an Oracle expert who does not publish their resume and credentials online.  There are many pretenders, inexperienced tuning experts with no real-world experience and even more "fake" Oracle experts who publish puffed resumes, exaggerating their true tuning expertise.
   

• Verifiable references - A real Oracle tuning expert will publish verifiable customer feedback.
