Installing Multiple Versions of Oracle

Oracle Database Tips by Donald Burleson

Question:

I would like to install Oracle 8.1.7/ 9i Release 1 Database and Oracle 9i Release 1 Application Server on one server. I would like to know if this is possible and which of the following Operating systems can best handle this configuration: Suse Linux 8.0, 9.3, Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4, Win 2003
server, Win 2000 Pro or Win XP Pro?

This question posed on 10 September 2005

Answer:

Yes it is possible however the server will need some horsepower to provide any performance. You are also installing applications that are no longer supported by Oracle.

I would recommend that you use a supported version of Linux or at least one of the more recent versions. Linux will provide more memory to the application than Windows will on a basic server (1-2 CPU and 4Gb RAM). These versions will require that the server support two databases, and two application server instances. A lot for one server. If you are not being forced to use these older versions of the application server and database, I would recommend that you use the 10g database and application server, placing the metadata
repository in the 10g database so that there is only one database.
