Question: I see that select any
dictionary seems to have the same ability as the
select_catalog_role for read-only privileges against the data
dictionary views.
What is the difference between select any dictionary and
select_catalog_role?
Answer: The differences are subtle between
select any dictionary and select_catalog_role.
It comes down to the difference between the properties of a
system-level privilege and a role.
Remember, a role is a collection of system-level or object-level
privileges:
- select any dictionary: This is a system-level
privilege that is always active and allows the grantee to create
objects.
- select_catalog_role: This is a role, which is a
collection of privileges. A role can be specifically enabled or
disabled and this role cannot be used to create any objects
(tables).
