Oracle database products

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonAugust 16,  2015

Question:  I hear that Oracle has a collection of many databases other than the Oracle relational database.  What other databases are owned by Oracle corporation?

Answer:  As Oracle grew and acquired companies such as Sun Microsystems, that acquired a variety of database management systems.  However, the databases are not always the reason that Oracle acquires the company, they just come with the company, as when Oracle purchased Sun, which owns rights to the MySQL database.

Oracle has a history of sidelining databases, such as the RDB database product for VMS, which was purchased from DEC in 1994 and not significantly promoted nor enhanced as an Oracle database product.

Oracle also learned that they require specialized databases for specialized functions, and their idea of the "Oracle Universal Server" was a major flop.  Today, Oracle has specialized data storage platforms for text (Oracle Con*Text), databases for online analytical processing (TimesTen), and other specialized database tools for non traditional data.

Oracle also owns several non-relational databases for VMS, such as Oracle CODASYL DB, a network architecture database.

As of 2015, Oracle owns Oracle Database 11g, plus Oracle CODASYL DB, MySQL, RDB, TimesTen, Berkeley DB and InnoDB.
