Oracle10g Grid Computing with RAC
Chapter 8 - RAC Administration

Conclusion

In this chapter we have examined some of the RAC-specific administrative features. The main points of the chapter include:

  • Parameter Management involves maintaining either the server side SPFILE or client side init_sid.ora files. The SPFILE method is recommended and is a better method, because it allows the initialization parameters to be changed dynamically. Beginning with Release 9i, Oracle permits many more parameters to be changed dynamically.

  • There are basically three types of initialization parameters for RAC systems. They are: 1) Parameters whose values have to be unique among the instances. 2) Parameters whose values have to be common among the instances. 3) Parameters that can take different values in different instances.

  • The Automatic Segment Space Management method takes care of segment space management internally. It employs bit-mapped blocks (BMB) and keeps track of the used and free space. Auto method can be specified at the tablespace level.  Optionally, the old method that uses Free List and Free List groups can still be used.

  • Auto Undo Management simplifies the rollback or undo segment management. When auto undo management is chosen, required undo segments are automatically created.

  • ASM – Automatic Storage Management is used to manage disk resources.
